If you need to miss class, email at least 15 minutes before class and your absence will be excused. -- ## Reading Journals Write a journal about the assigned reading for many days of class (17 total). Reading journals will help you prepare for class discussion, and are graded on a 0/1 scale. -- ## Labs Complete four implementation-focused labs that will stress your systems building skills. You can choose to complete labs individually or in groups. Like reading journals, these are graded on a 0/1 scale. -- ## Final Project Complete a small research-like project later in the semester. Apply concepts and techniques from papers we read and the labs earlier in the course. Projects are graded on a 0/1/2 scale. --- # Course Website
*Let's take a quick tour of the site now.* --- class: section, blue # Discussion --- # Discussion: Systems Research The assigned reading for today described what makes a good systems research paper. Using what you've learned from the reading and your own judgement and experience, consider the following questions: -- 1. What is the purpose of a systems research paper? -- 2. What important pieces should every systems research paper include? -- 3. What should you (an undergraduate in an advanced elective) get out of reading a systems research paper? -- 4. Was there anything else you took away from today's reading that you'd like to share or discuss? -- Start by thinking about these questions on your own (quietly). Once everyone has had some time to think we will start a whole-class discussion. --- # Your Interests I have a collection of classic/important papers we will read this semester, but I want to choose the rest of the papers on topics that interest you. 1. Are there specific topics (i.e. from CSC 213) you would like to explore in more depth? 2. Are there systems you use or know about that you'd like to learn more about? --- class: section, green # How to Read a Paper --- class: section, blue # Wrap Up --- # Reminders ## Reading - **Engineering Record and Replay for Deployability** (USENIX Annual Technical Conference (2017)) Your reading journal for the assigned reading is due one hour before class. Make sure your journal is submitted to Gradescope as a plain text file or PDF (no Word documents, please).
